Holiday Cure-All: The Hot Toddy

Toddy Long

Ahhh, the holidaze. It was a long flight back home, and the two rows separating you from the sneezing, coughing family does not seem like it was enough to protect you from the imminent cold coming on. Perhaps a day of sledding with your brothers, sisters, nieces and nephew didn’t help the cause. Regardless, it’s Christmas Eve and you’d like a little something to help ward off any ill effects of your holidays at home.

Enter the Hot Toddy. Warmth from both base and spirit will soon get you right. Our favorite recipe is terribly easy; Hot water, high quality honey (the darker the better, we love local Seattle Ballard Bee Company), lemon, either a dash of cinnamon or a small amount of clove, and Bourbon that you would drink neat. We’ve also used Brandy or Cognac (so smooth), Rum (a little sweet for our taste), even Grappa or Eau de Vie (whoa, nelly).  All measurements are essentially to taste, though one mustn’t go too far on the Spirit so as to offset the medicinal effect of the drink. As simple as a Toddy can be, you want to do it right; use only the best ingredients you can as a cheaper substitute will impart poor flavor and quickly flaw your midwinter warm up.

Find your balance of flavor, experiment with your favorite spirit of choice, and share your favorite recipe with us! You never know when another cold might be coming on.

Another Great Aeration Innovation

We have the first look at HOST Studio’s newest aeration innovation, the WHIRL aerating wine glass.

This brand new wine glass is nothing like you have ever used before.  The WHIRL is made of a shatter-proof plastic that has specific design elements to aerate your favorite wines right in the glass.

As you gently swirl the glass, wine runs along the three internal aeration ridges agitating the wine and introducing oxygen to the wine. This creates a perfect mixture of wine and air positively affecting the wine’s flavor.  The oxygen introduced by the act of swirling binds with the tannin molecules to make the wine seem softer and reducing sulfites as well.

Swirling a glass of wine also releases aromatic compounds into the air. Every wine has these fragrant aroma compounds, some wines more than others, depending on the structure and character of the grape, and releasing these compounds makes the varietal aromas more apparent and enjoyable on the nose.

HOST continues to surprise us with the hottest new products.  HOST is a high quality brand by True Fabrications that will stand above the rest. HOST works hard to engineer and perfect their products so that you can sit back, relax and revel in life’s small pleasures.

Be the first to have this great new product! Look for availability around May 1st.

Don’t Forget: Your Wine Needs to Breathe

You’ve heard of people opening a bottle of wine hours before serving, but do you know why?

Wine too needs to breathe.  Based on the type of wine, the hours of aeration may vary.  The more robust the wine the longer it needs to aerate or breathe.  Mixing with oxygen allows the flavor of the wine to soften and mellow out, ultimately improving the flavor.

Typically red wines benefit most from breathing before serving. However, there are select whites that will also improve with a little air exposure.  Usually younger wines have a higher tannin level, requiring more aeration time before serving.

Some believe just uncorking a bottle of wine will suffice, but with a wine that requires hours of aeration this can be quite inconvenient and time consuming.

After extensive scientific testing HOST Studios has a solution. After attaining the ability to measure the amount of oxygen that most decanters add to wine over time, HOST Studios was able to create an instant aerator that saves anywhere from 0-6 hours of decanting with each pour.

The TWIST, a handheld adjustable aerator allows you to instantly aerate any wine from 0 to 6 hours making it ready to serve right when you want to serve or drink it.  With a simple twist of the stainless steel band you are able to select how much air mixes with the wine.  As you pour through the flow meter, watch and listen as it steadily aerates.

The TWIST has stainless steel band and is made from BPA-free acrylic, food grade silicone to ensure a perfect seal, and the seamless exterior allows you to confidently hold the aerator anywhere without the risk of blocking essential air inlets.

The TWIST is a great product for any wine lover, and can guarantee the perfect glass of wine every time you pour.

Oktoberfest!

Attracting anywhere from 5 to 6 million visitors each year to Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest was officially the world’s largest fair in 2012.

Oktoberfest was originally the celebration of a Bavarian royal Wedding in 1810. It became an annual tradition as a result of the immense amount of people who congregated and rejoiced with the family.

Oktoberfest was originally celebrated with an annual horse-race, and evolved into amusement rides, including the first horse carrousel, local vendors and street performers.  Drawing in more and more individuals each year, Oktoberfest continued to progress appealing to many different cultures.

Currently in Munich, Oktoberfest is a 16 day festivity, celebrated this year from September 22 to October 7.  The festivities began with a parade led by the mayor throughout the fairgrounds to the tapping of the first beer keg.  The ceremonial tapping of the first beer keg is the official start to Oktoberfest.  Promptly done at noon, the keg was tapped and everyone shouted O’zapft is! (“It’s tapped!”).

Best known for the array of beer tents, all beers served at Oktoberfest were about 6% alcohol, brewed within the Munich city limits. Oktoberfest also entertained guests with amusement rides, performers, vendor booths with gastronomic delights and customary garments worn by many.

Munich will forever host the original and most traditional Oktoberfest, but is now imitated by over 100 countries, and is celebrated in different ways all over the world.

Is there an Oktoberfest near you?

If you missed out on the festivities this year, host your own Oktoberfest with our True Fabrications™ beer accessories, including assorted bottle openers, beer bands and kits to brew your own, guaranteeing  superlative products for a remarkable time.
